There is something I have learned as I passed the age 45 or so. God made our ovaries shrivel for a reason. We cannot afford to waste what's left of our precious energy on small children because they will suck us dry. I know this is true because I babysat for my friend's two-year-old granddaughter one afternoon and spent all the next day recouperating. Some of this is my own fault because of my need to leave a lasting impression on the tiny being (which I did), which can result in a tendency to be overly dramatic (which I was). Two-year-olds are heavily into repetition and as an adult with OCD I am happy to oblige them. Look! I can sit up and fall back down, I can sit up and fall back down, I can sit up and fall back down...! I had an audience and she was laughing, I couldn't help myself. But so, so tiring. I don't understand how anyone over 40 can adopt or give birth or even finish raising the kids they already started. What about those poor souls who end up raising their grandchildren? Bless them. Bless them all.
